Menu Plan Monday and a Giveaway!

Thanks to Laura at 'I'm an Organizing Junkie' for hosting Menu Plan Mondays!

We did fairly well with last week's menu plan. We had more chicken cooked than we needed for the meals we had planned, so we added chicken onion quesedillas to the mix. Yum!

Here's the plan for this week:

Breakfasts (some will repeat)

Cold Cereal, Fruit, Milk
Vanilla Yogurt, Peanut Butter Granola, Fruit, Water
Breakfast Burritos and Clementines, Milk
Peanut Butter Toast, Oranges or Applesauce, Milk
Oatmeal with Applesauce, Cinnamon and Raisins, Milk
Bran Muffins, Applesauce, Milk

Photobucket
Click the link above for our granola recipe.

Lunches (our main meal)

M: Cesar Salad, Grilled Steak, Baked Potatoes, Seared Mushrooms, Pineapple-Lime Sorbet

T: Barbecued 'Pulled Turkey' on Homemade Buns w/Hot Sauce and Pickles, Cole Slaw, Oranges

W: Chili over Brown Rice, Peaches

R: Sliced Ham, Macaroni and Cheese, Peas and Carrots, Pears

F: Hash Brown Skillet Omelet, Biscuits w/Butter and Jam, Oranges

S: Chicken & Noodles w/Carrots and Celery, Cheese and Crackers, Apple Wedges

S: Chili & Cheese on Hot Dogs or Baked Potatoes, Oranges

There's a rumor going around that we might get pizza one day instead of the planned meal. If so, things will shift accordingly. :)

Suppers are generally leftovers from previous days, PBJ and carrots, that sort of thing.

Snacks:
Popcorn & Raisins
Apple Wedges & Peanut Butter
Chips & Salsa
Yogurt & Granola
Cheese & Crackers
Muffins & Applesauce

So hey, how about a little giveaway? I have a book of recipes that I really like - it's called Once A Month Cooking. This is an older book. I got it used...and then, in a moment of forgetfulness at some point, I got another copy of it...also used...so I want to share it with one of y'all. It's really useful if you are trying to save time and money in the kitchen. Also, to brighten up your kitchen a wee bit, I'll include a crocheted dishcloth, hand-made by me!

This little giveaway is open to anyone in North America who reads my little blog. Please, one entry per person. To enter, simply reply to this post by answering this question:

What is your favorite comfort food? Feel free to go into detail!

I'll shut the comments down Thursday night (1/14/10) and announce the winner on Friday the 15th. If you have a blog, please let your readers know so they can enter too!

Good luck, and thanks for playing!

It is the recipe for my Mil's chicken and dumplings. Since she had passed away, I have been trying to make this for years but never quite like her's. When my sister-in-law passed away two years ago I found her recipe for it. When I make it I remember when my Mil tried to teach me and I never wrote it down and now I can make this all the time for my dh. Cheryl
My comfort food fav is steel cut oats. I could eat them for everymeal.I love reading your blog. Always something fun and new.

You are such a dear for doing this! My comfort food would be rice pudding. My grandma used to serve it to me when I would visit. Now I make my own, with lots of variations, even using coconut milk and cardamom, and once even added a bunch of persimmons. Funny thing, it is comfort food for my cats too. When I got them at 1 day old, they could not keep warm, so we put dry rice in a sock, then would heat it in the microwave for them. We called it the "Rice Mommy" and even 11 years later the kitties get silly with affection when I make rice or rice pudding!

I had to run and check out that granola recipe right away! Looks amazing! I seriously would love to make that. You are one of my heroes with Menu Plan Monday. So far I can't get past dinner. This is no big deal since my husband takes those frozen dinners several times a week (I am trying to break him of this), my son does peanut butter sandwiches every day at school (9 years straight!), and I stick with whatever leftover is around. :) Love your ideas!

OOOH! I forgot, I definitely would like to enter the giveaway. My comfort food is mashed potatoes with homemade gravy. Well...that or mashed potatoes with Kentucky Fried chicken gravy. :) I still like to make tracks with my fork in them. I guess they just bring me back to being a kid. :) I don't know if you need my email, so here it is:

My favorite comfort food... that's tough! I lean toward soup though. Especially Oxtail Soup with barley... or now I've discovered I can substitute quinoa (if I toast it first) and have a wonderful meal. I use Oxtails and beef short ribs for the beef, onion, celery carrots, and of course, beef stock. Served hot, with toasted crusty bread... heaven in a bowl. I promise!!

Comfort food? A milkshake. It's hard to feel bad when I'm eating sweet creamy ice cream, and the milkshake texture adds another dimension of comfort. My mother took me to Dairy Queen after both times I failed my driving test, and I remember DH procuring me a chocolate milkshake after an ultrasound verified my miscarriage several years ago.

mac & cheese- made from the blue box, no milk added please! i mix the cheesy powder with the butter and dump the hot mac on top. after it's mixed, i add shredded sharp cheddar and nuke it for a minute or so. i have eaten it like this since i was 11!

great giveaway, great hostess!
Actually a comfort food for my kids would be mashed potatoes, sausages and gravy, or Heinz Baked Beans.........Mashed potatoes and gravy were the first type of soilid food they were introduced too. Back in the day we weren't as picky with "special" baby foods!!!

For me comfort food is homemade mac and cheese........

My all time fave would be Grandmother's Cinnamon Toast. She would use whole wheat bread and coat it in butter. Then she added powdered sugar and lots of cinnamon and toasted it under the broier. It still says "I love you" when I taste it.

I love mac and cheese
Comfort food? Being from the Midwest- the bread basket of America, we know comfort food. I love potatoes! Specifically, mashed potatoes. They can be any kind--real, instant, cheddar, garlic, yukon gold, Idaho; but my favorite is right out of the garden, Pontiac reds. They are so moist and sweet and creamy......great with butter or gravy ( you know that gravy you make from pan drippings after you've fried chicken? ), with chopped onions or cheese and sour cream. Ooooooh, or in a hot beef sandwich with rich brown gravy. And with goulash---or under homemade chicken and noodles....... I even use instant mashed potatoes for the thickening in my loaded baked potato soup. I just love mashed potatoes! And I can't think of a shirt I have without a gravy spot! LOL Mashed potatoes are good with fried chicken or meatloaf, or turkey and stuffing or pork chops ( yum ) or round steak and brown gravy, or swiss steak and vegetable gravy, or roast beef---my gosh, they're good with anything. Yep, if I were stranded on an island and could only have one food for the rest of my life---it would be the POTATO!

Auntie Marsha said: My favorite comfort food is Stewed Tomato Soup. Nothing brings back Summer faster than opening up a quart of your own canned tomatos and stewing gently on the stove, seasoning, stirring, and topping off with a little water till it's all mushy and yummy. Spoon up a bowl, tear up some left over (homemade) biscuits, stir till it's a "just right" consistency, and enjoy. Grandma C's standby when tummies felt yucky. Seems to always settle them down, without feeling heavy.

My husband's chili. It's awesome and I always eat way too much of it. We eat it every Sunday in the fall and winter while we're watching football
