A Peek at Our Week!
Apologies for the lack of photos. I had the camera yesterday - in the house. No idea where it is right now, but the photos are in the camera....sigh.
We're thawing out from a bit of spring snow. Daughter is also recuperating from a springtime cold. I attended church by myself this past Sunday, because she was home resting up and trying to get better.
This past week was Spring Break, so we didn't have a lot of schoolwork to do, but we had six (!!!) library chicken programs. We've been out on the prairie, up in the mountains, down in the valley...and our chickens have been photographed hundreds and hundreds of times. They are such good sports, and seem to really enjoy all the handling. Marshmallow, one of our roosters, has fallen asleep in someone's arms on two different occasions. I'm sorry I don't have photos, but when you're trying to keep track of 7 chickens, a 7 year old and your car keys, the camera just feels like a little too much!
We also got to work on sprouting some herbs. This is a school project for Daughter, so we'll share more in-depth about it soon.
I've been bitten by the terrarium bug. I have been happily building little worlds inside glass containers. As a kid, I thought they had to have a cover, but I've been reading multiple terrarium books, and it isn't a requirement. That really opens up the possibilities, and I've found some interesting glass shapes at Goodwill for next to nothing that have allowed me to play just a bit. It's fun to combine plants and wee treasures to create little worlds. I'm enjoying it very much.
I've also been reading up on microgreens. I think we would be able to grow some for salads and stir fry, so I'm going to experiment with various containers and locations in our house. Since our safe spring weather isn't until late May, these plant projects will keep me happily growing things until I can garden outdoors.
Daughter discovered Erin Hunter's Warriors series of books - she describes them as 'books about cats that live in the forest'. I had book one, and she read it in about two hours. Yikes! I have books 2 and 3 on hold at the library, and we'll pick them up as soon as they come in.
For no particular reason, we made a batch of playdough and colored/scented it with a packet of unsweetened cherry koolaid. It smells awesome, and the color is a nice deep red. Daughter has enjoyed kneading, rolling and shaping it into all sorts of things.
Husband and I have started taping the garage drywall. We are learning as we go, but I think it's going well! I did the ceiling seams today, and I'm currently wearing a fair amount of mud. Drywall mud is white, so I kinda look like a snowman.

Speaking of fun tasks, I picked up 2 packages of bees today and introduced them to their new hives. They are busy just buzzing away in there this evening. I made sure to put lots of sugar water and pollen patties in the hives so they can start producing wax and getting acquainted with their new surroundings. I hope it goes well! I remember you tended bees a few years ago and I was always fascinated. Wish me luck!
I'm about to do some serious budget crunching tomorrow to see where I am. Apparently, my employer is having some hard times and has told us we need to take 8 furlough days between now and June 30th. I hope that is not a sign of things to come...
So far we're just getting the tape embedded, so I still have at least one more coat of mud before we start thinking we're getting somewhere. I am going to work on corners tomorrow, I think. I am kinda, sorta dreading the ceiling/wall corners because of the ladder and all, but I agree - I think even the corners where a wall meets a wall will be a challenge.
I know you will come up with a prudent, practical budget. Still, I will keep you in my prayers!
