Representation

Early art experiences for young children are about the materials and the process. They explore texture, temperature, color, intensity - usually all at the same time it seems, and in great volumes. Young children will paint holes in paper, or color multiple layers of color on a paper that makes parents say things like, 'Ooh...now nice......what is it?', because young children are interested in the process - not the final product.

This is a beautiful thing, because when you're absorbed in the moment and what you're doing, instead of worrying about whether or not it's 'right' or how it's going to turn out, art is joy, and creation, and fun.

Then, a teency bit of different magic happens, and artwork starts to represent things. Suddenly, the scribble is an apple, or mama, or the day we went to the zoo.

It's exciting, watching her find her own artistic voice, her own style. I can hardly wait to see what is next.
